The gooch. The taint. The perineum. The chin-of-the-butt. Whatever you want to call it, we need to talk about the small strip of skin between your genitals and your anus, because most of you have been ignoring it for years and it is, in fact, part of your body.

What is it.

Anatomically: the perineum is the diamond-shaped region between your groin and your rectum. Everyone has one. It varies in size. It is neither the front nor the back — it is the negotiation between the two.

Functionally: it’s a sweat magnet. It’s in a warm, enclosed area of your body, wearing pants, all day. It has fewer sweat glands than your armpits but roughly the same job. And unlike your armpits, nobody talks about it.

Why it needs attention.

Bacterial growth on the perineum is the leading cause of what your gym calls "swamp ass" and what your doctor calls "intertrigo." It’s uncomfortable at best and can lead to real skin issues at worst. It’s also, for what it’s worth, extremely detectable at close range.

None of this is a moral failing. It’s biology. The gooch is doing exactly what it was built to do. Your job is to keep it clean.

The care routine.

It’s embarrassingly simple:

  • Shower daily. Actually clean the area, not just let water hit it.
  • Dry thoroughly. Moisture is the whole problem.
  • Wear breathable underwear. Cotton, or a merino if you’re being fancy.
  • Wipe after bathroom visits. All of them. Yes, this one too.
  • On hot days or after workouts — a wipe. Not optional.

A pack of wet wipes in your gym bag will solve about 85% of the problem you didn’t know you had. A pack at your desk will handle the rest. This is not a marketing bit. This is just what people who have figured this out already do.

One more thing.

You may be reading this and thinking: "I feel fine. I don’t have a gooch problem." Consider that the gooch problem is essentially the toilet paper problem — you don’t notice it because you’ve normalized it. You’ve been walking around slightly damp and mildly musty for years and calling it "how being alive feels."

It doesn’t have to feel like that.
